Out of all the things I’ve leaned from chronic illness, this is probably the most important. When Lupus talks, you better listen. It’s not just about the pain and such, although that’s certainly part of it. If you listen to what your chronic illness tells you, you can prolong your life, suffer less and have a more fulfilling life.
Do listen to Lupus pain
Pain is a signal that something is wrong. No matter how much pain you’re in daily, or how “normal” pain is for you, don’t dismiss it. Don’t tell yourself it’s OK or normal for you to be in pain. You don’t have to be. If your current natural solutions or medications still leave you suffering, find some that don’t. If you’re in more pain than usual, find out why before it’s too late. There may even be something going on besides Lupus.
Listen to Lupus limitations
Lupus can be so physically limiting. It may be tempting for determined people to ignore their limits and overdo it. On my good days, I used to make this mistake. I was so happy about feeling better, that I would try to literally do it all. Then, the next day would be filled with horrendous pain. Now, I do a little more on my good days without going crazy and hurting myself. When Lupus hands you a good day, use it well. Don’t abuse it.
Be aware of triggers
Stay away from Lupus triggers. Know what impacts your health negatively. For me, that’s soda pop and cheese. Your Lupus triggers may differ from mine. I’ve given up dairy and carbonated, caffeinated drinks. They produce inflammation and incredible bouts of pain. Lupus told me to stay away from them. Because I listened, I feel much better. You can do the same, no matter what triggers your flares.
See your flares coming
Recognizing signs that the worst is coming can help keep pain and suffering minimal. When I see that my legs are swelling, I put my feet up right away. When I first feel the onset of pain, I do something about it. By”nipping it in the bud” I keep my flares minimal. Once you’ve had Lupus for some time, you’ll learn your personal flare signs. Don’t make the mistake of ignoring them. Address them right away.
Listen to your inner Lupus voice
When Lupus speaks to you, you better be listening. Otherwise, you can compromise your health. You can reduce a lot of your suffering simply by listening to what your mind and body tell you. Lupus speaks loudly sometimes. At other times, you have to use your sixth sense to hear it. Staying aware can make all the difference.
