Indoor playgrounds are cropping up all over the world as a safer environment, and better supervised, from the traditional outdoor playgrounds. These pay-for-play businesses are a great way for moms or caretakers to have some time to themselves, while kids play in bounce houses or other play structures. Bounce houses are what’s seen at someone’s private birthday party in their front yard. With so many children playing on a daily basis at these indoor play lands, there may be concern for safety and sanitary issues. Here are some facts, and what you need to be aware of, when taking your child to any type of indoor playground facility.
Did you know there are no regulations, on the state or federal levels, in effect to protect your child from safety and cleanliness issues at indoor play lands? These are the play areas you find at McDonalds, Burger King, and Chucky E. Cheese’s. According to CNN Health, an investigative journalist went to an indoor play area only to find broken down and faulty equipment; rotting food, grime, and filth that was later determined as fecal matter. Even with complaints to management, nothing was ever done.
After a microbiologist tested the area, it was later discovered pathogens were found that can make children ill and bacteria that can be deadly. These pathogens can cause meningitis, hair, scalp and skin infections, abscesses, gastrointestinal disease/infection, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, food borne illness, and more.
Recently a pay-for-play indoor playground has opened in my area. They’re called PlayGrounds, which is a state-of-the-art bounce house. At PlayGrounds of Tampa they stress a safe and fun environment with a highly trained supervised staff, while parents have a cup of coffee or simply relax. You’ll always have a clear line of sight on your child at all times. One of the things they stress on their website, and in other literature, is for children to wear socks at all times. If you forget to bring socks you can purchase a pair. Otherwise, if the child doesn’t have socks, they cannot play.
Outside food and beverages are not permitted at PlayGrounds. There is a concession area for the parents and other visitors watching the children. Unlike play lands that are inside fast food establishments, these indoor playgrounds are highly supervised and completely maintained. Their main goal is to create safety at all costs with all of their equipment. You always have their full attention and that will give you peace of mind.
