A lot of rumors are starting to fly around about the 2015 Marvel “Ant-Man” movie. A lot of these rumors have to be Marvel trying to turn around the fans after Edgar Wright quit the project. When Wright left, a lot of backlash hit the company, the first time they have had to weather something like this. However, they have done a decent job of dealing with the negative reaction and are really looking to convince people that everything will be all right.
The first thing they did was hire Peyton Reed to direct the movie and Adam McKay to work on the script. Next, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige stepped up and said that the movie is still the exact same story that Edgar Wright was working on, just with some polishes made to it. Finally, Marvel announced the plotline and the villain, along with throwing in a hint of who the villain might actually be.
First of all, this “Ant-Man” movie will tell the origin story of Scott Lang, the man who was the second Ant-Man from the comic books. Paul Rudd will play Lang while Michael Douglas will star as Hank Pym, the man who was the first Ant-Man in the comic book world. In this world, it doesn’t sound like Pym will have ever worked as Ant-Man, and just has the suit and technology that Lang will break in to steal.
The plot synopsis also states that Lang is a single dad, which he was in the comics. In the books, he stole the suit to save a doctor who had been kidnapped that might be able to save Lang’s daughter, who has a rare and deadly disease. Also mentioned in the Marvel synopsis is the fact that Ant-Man will have a helmet that allows him to communicate with ants, just like in the comics, as well as body armor that might allow him to use his stinger blasts.
As for who the villain is, the synopsis said that it will be a man named Darren Cross. The movie synopsis said that he is a rich man who runs a tech company similar to Stark Industries or OsCorp. Heading to the comic book world, Cross is one of Scott Lang’s biggest villains and was the man responsible for kidnapping the doctor that Lang needed to save his daughter. With this in mind, it sounds like they may be going with the sick daughter story for the movie since they are using the villain from that story.
However, there looks to be a possible change for the origin story. In the comics, Cross tries to save himself before kidnapping the good doctor and ends up a hulking misshapen creature, similar to a pink Hulk. He looked ridiculous in the comics, and that never could have worked on the big screen. Instead, the word is that Cross will have the power to shrink down like Ant-Man and has a yellow and black body suit. That sounds just like Yellowjacket, another hero that Hank Pym portrayed in the comics. If this is the case, they are completely changing the character of Yellowjacket from an interesting hero into another villain.
