She kept a secret. She promised she would not tell. At night, all alone in bed. she sobbed. She had to get the pain all out of her system before she faced him tomorrow. What else could she do? She asked, to no one but herself.
When she had found out, she broke down in tears. She called the doctor to find out more. She made a promise not to discuss this with him until all the tests were complete. She had to keep it to herself!
She didn’t know if she could keep that big of a secret, and for how long.- just thinking about it brought her tears.
The day went on as usual. They met at the park and shared lunch. He had made tuna and cole slaw and she brought along bread, pickles and soda. She bought a bottle of beer just for him. She did not like the taste, she never did!
They took the blanket out of the trunk of the car. She unfolded it and lay it on top of the still moist grass. She was wearing old jeans and he was dressed the same, so neither one was worried about getting their pants dirty. They had a washing machine at home for just this reason.
They spoke about unimportant things that went on a day ago. She smiled as she told him about the cat she saw and wanted to adopt. The conversation was light, meaningless and unimportant but they continued until they stopped, wiped the smile off their faces, and went on to another topic.
He began – ” I have bad news for you my dear.”
She gulped and held her breath
“I went to the doctor and took a complete examination” He paused and then went on… “Do you remember the headaches I’ve been getting”, he asked. She nodded. her eyes filled with tears as she waited for the next few words to be
“I am dying”
Instead he stood up and loudly cheered. Others in the park looked at him and smiled. She waited with baited breath as he continued, and said
His health had improved. The doctor took X-rays and saw no new spots on his lung. The medication he had been given had finally helped. He reached out and kissed her! He had tears running down his cheek.
The tears that now flowed down her face were tears of joy!! She jumped up and hugged him!! Lets get married and not wait anymore.
He shook his head in agreement! The wedding took place the following week!
