Hydra is one of the most powerful and subversive terrorist organizations in the Marvel comics universe. Hydra takes its name from the mythical serpentine creature with the ability to grow two heads when one is severed. Through the years, Hydra has been able to return from defeat seemingly stronger than before.
In the movie version of the Marvel Universe, Hydra was formed in Nazi Germany by the Red Skull (Johann Schmidt). The group believed that they had the ability to overthrow the Nazi government and then rule the world. During World War II, Hydra was responsible for the raid and theft of an ancient artifact known as the Tesseract. Johann Schmidt called the Tesseract the jewel of Odin’s treasure room. The Tesseract has been revealed as one of the Infinity Stones and part of a collection of six objects.
The Tesseract is a cube shaped object with nearly unlimited power. Hydra began research to harness the energy of the Tesseract into weapons development. The organization was successful and sought to use this advantage in an attempt to rule the world.
Captain America led a special task force to stop Hydra and their plans to launch an attack against the United States. The ensuing battle would seemingly be the end of Hydra with their defeat. The battle led to the apparent death of the Red Skull and left Captain America frozen in suspended animation.
It was believed that Hydra was destroyed and the organization left in ruin. However, the latest events of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD and Captain America: The Winter Soldier would tell us otherwise. Hydra was not dead as many had thought. Instead, Hydra had become a subversive part of SHIELD. SHIELD is a worldwide counter intelligence organization led by Nick Fury. SHIELD is responsible for the development of the Avengers Initiative and the formation of the team. Hydra raised its head and began an all-out attempt to overthrow SHIELD.
Hydra has been working behind the scenes and under the radar for decades waiting for the opportunity to strike. After being discovered by Captain America, Hydra launched a subversive strike against SHIELD agents around the globe. Captain America would defeat Hydra’s main attempt to rule the world with the destruction of three super heli-carriers. SHIELD is now in ruins and the remnants of the organization are scrambling to stop Hydra. The television series Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is chronicling the ongoing battle with Hydra.
One more element of the Hydra organization was revealed at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The final scene, following the credits, revealed a Hydra research facility and its apparent leader. Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker was watching a set of twins to see their powers at work. These twins were Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. There can be little doubt that Von Stucker is going to play a major role in the second Avengers movie and that the battle with Hydra is far from over. The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters in May of 2014.
