When you drive across America, you see hoards of the same restaurants offering the exact same food. Ouch!
But America is a wealth of food diversity, if you take the time to look. Think of lobster rolls in New England, or gumbo in New Orleans. Don’t forget crabs in Maryland or bagels in New York City! Then there is Pizza! Who has the best? Everyone has a favorite!
Let’s talk about the hot dog. A simple piece of processed meat that is readily available almost everywhere. But, Chicago has made it something special. Sure, you can get them elsewhere, but they will be called “Chicago Dogs”!
What makes a Chicago Dog?
First, the dog must be all beef with a casing that give that ‘snap’ when you take a bite.
A fresh bun comes next. It could be a poppy seed bun or the seeds could be sprinkled on the sandwich later, but the poppy seeds are required.
Now we move to the toppings. What follows is a fully loaded dog, feel free to skip anything not to your taste.
Chopped white onions
Dill Pickle spear (not a slim slice!)
Tomato slices or a tomato wedge
Sport peppers (spicy, but not overpowering.)
Top it off with celery salt
No kraut. No grilled onions. No relish. No toasted bun. And never, never, never ketchup!
And, yes, it is a very messy eat. But, so very good. It is so worth the mess!
