Basketball season is never more exciting than it is in March, when more than 60 different teams have a chance to win it all. So if you’re celebrating this year’s tournament with a party, shouldn’t you make the most out of theme? Find out what foods to serve to make your get-together perfect.
Going Mad in March
For a basketball-themed party, you’ll need food that can be eaten by hand. You should also look for items that don’t make a mess, since it’s likely that guests will be seating in your living spaces while eating because they want to view the game. And if you can find foods that somehow echo the theme of the party, it’s perfect. So what foods can do all that for you?
Sliders: Mini sandwiches, or sliders, are trendy and totally perfect for a basketball game because they’re round in shape. Make one kind of sliders or several different flavors. They can be served as an appetizer or a main course.
Cheese poppers/sticks: Easy-to-handle finger foods are always good at a party, and any kind of fried cheese poppers or cheese sticks are sure to go over big with guests. You can find them in the frozen food aisle, but with a little more work it isn’t difficult to make your own.
Bean dip: Mix a can of black beans with a can of corn. Add some mayonnaise and lemon juice, and you’ve got the makings for a delicious, cool bean dip. It can be enjoyed with chips or crackers. Add your own seasonings to taste.
Blue cheese dip: Serve cold vegetables, like cucumber and carrot sticks, with a rich blue cheese dip.
Meatballs: The round shape makes meatballs a go-to food for any party. They’re a delicious appetizer when served with toothpicks. Put out hoagie rolls, and guests can make their own meatball sandwiches as well. Cook meatballs in sauce in a crock pot to get great flavor.
Cupcakes: For dessert, serve cupcakes . Make white cupcakes and add a few drops of orange food coloring (or yellow and red) to the batter. Top cupcakes with orange frosting to make them look like basketballs. Put your dessert over-the-top by drawing lines on top of the cupcakes to make them resemble little basketballs even more. The lines can be drawn with dark brown frosting in a piping bag, but it may be easier to use melted chocolate and an eye dropper. If you’re pulling for a particular team, you can always make cupcakes in your team colors using food dyes.
Invite guests to come to your March Madness party wearing their team colors. Make brackets available for guests to fill out, and decorate with sports- and basketball-themed decor. Use food to bring all the elements of the party together.
