Growing up in a devoutly Christian household, Easter is a special holiday for my family and meI. It marks the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and is really the cornerstone of Christianity. It holds a very special place in all of our hearts because of this. While it holds a deeply religious meaning to us, this does not mean you have to be deeply religious to enjoy it. Easter can be whatever you want to make it. While it is a religious holiday to my family, if it is a social holiday to yours, that is fine. Don’t get caught up on what everyone else says the true meaning of Easter is. Instead, look inside and see what it means to you!
Easter does not have nearly the commercial madness that comes with Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has those traditions that come with it, but it is definitely the silent holiday. There are no day after Easter sales that actually start at 8 PM. There is no exchange of gifts. There is no real Easter “season” that is universally recognized. No one goes around singing Easter Carols. There are very few classic Easter movies, outside of a few religious ones. If there is one holiday you can avoid altogether, this is probably it. But that does not mean you should. Why not take the time to appreciate the ones you love, whether they are Christians, Atheists, Buddhists, or Agnostics: Easter gives you a great platform to make this happen.
Easter can have whatever meaning you give it. If you want it to be just another day, that is fine. If it holds a religious meaning in your heart, like it does in my life, that is fine to. If it is a day that is all about family, and watching the little ones having a little fun, that is fine. Easter should be a time to set aside all of your differences, get together with your family and loved ones, and just enjoy the day, whether it is at church, at your house, or at another person’s house, use it as a day of fellowship.
Many people will throw out all sorts of different “meanings of Easter” out there. While some may be right to them, it doesn’t have to be right for you. Easter is what you make it. Take advantage of the time to get reacquainted with the ones you love. The meaning of Easter is whatever you want it to be in your heart. So Happy Easter to everyone, and enjoy it in whatever way makes you happy.
