If you have an ant problem in your home, you know they can be tenacious little creatures. Getting rid of the ants in your home can be a problem, even for an exterminator. Before we grapple with the task of how to get rid of the ant in the home, we must first understand some simple ant basics.
It has been argued that ants are the perfect society. They have evolved to adapt to nearly every environment. They possess a collective consciousness and have a specific goal oriented lifestyle. In the animal kingdom they are regarded as being among the most successful on the planet. There are many benefits that ants offer to people that we do not often consider. Let’s look at ants in our home for examples.
One ant can enter our home and find food. He leaves a chemical trail behind him that he follows back to his nest. He conveys his findings to the others via his antennae, which some believe to be a complex collective consciousness, the ant Internet, if you will. Each time an ant travels across the same chemical trail path toward the food source the trail is reinforced so that others can follow it. The crumbs you wastefully left on your counter are carried back to the nest rather that left to sit waiting for you to clean your kitchen. Some tribes in South America welcome the swarming ants into their homes because they leave nothing behind but clean floors. They also chase away poisonous spiders that can make you sick or even kill a child. And woe be onto the passing roach that crosses the trail of the ant!
Some ants will carry their entire nest upon their backs even over running water. They do this by latching their legs and pincers to form a raft. Other ants will carry the ant larvae to the edge to dip into the water to keep them cool. When the raft reaches land they unload to find establish a new home. People will drive past you as you walk on the roadside.
Ants are highly protective of their own. They truly have the all for one – one for all mentality. If an animal crosses over a large enough ant nest it could become a meal. People will cam you with their smart phones as you are eaten by an animal.
Ants are among the first creatures to realize that women rule! Those very large soldier ants with the huge pincers that stand guard over the smaller ants on the trail, well those are girls! People still struggle with this concept even within democratic societies.
There is no accurate estimate on the ant populations of the world. But it is safe to assume they outnumber people. As destructive as ants have been said to be in the environment as exampled by species such as the leaf cutter ant, they have not done a fraction of the damage done by only 10 billion people. So now that we know something about the ant we can address how to rid our homes of them. You can move to the Antarctic or simply keep your house clean and dry up any standing water.
