5 ideas that could reignite the spark:
Make no mistake, Apple is still among the world’s greatest organizations. Despite the precipitous drop-off in share price, Apple remains one of the most valuable companies in the world. With that said, the luster of products like the iPhone and iPad have begun to wear off, and the tech giant is in need of a spark. Here are 5 ways that the company can appease both their customers and their shareholders.
1) Apple TV
An Apple HDTV would be a huge splash in the industry. Their biggest competitor, Samsung, already has a stranglehold on this market. If Apple were to create a small but powerful lineup of TV’s, it could really put them on their heels. I think having 3 different models, a 46″, 55″, and 65-70″ variety would create just enough differentiation to appeal to a wide range of consumers. The two smaller models could be your “standard,” HDTV’s, while the 65 or 70″ model could be a top-of-the-line 4K screen. Priced appropriately, these TV’s would sell well, create a new product lineup and revenue streams, and create the kind of buzzworthy news the company is known for. Plus, it’s been rumored for quite some time and is almost a necessity now.
Another reason an Apple HDTV could prove to be extremely lucrative for the company is the impact it could have on the gaming industry. The app store has tons of games, and could be easily integrated into an HDTV. Any iPhone or iPad could function as a gaming controller, and making a standalone controller could allow Apple to create an even heavier focus on gaming. Essentially, the traditional console would be integrated directly into the TV. Such a move could literally transform the gaming industry overnight.
2) iPhone Overhaul
The iPhone 5 is a solid smartphone. It does many things well, and has been continued the trend of being one of the most popular phones available. To be sure, however, there are many areas that the phone can be improved. First and foremost, the phone is simply too small by modern smartphone standards. Sure, Apple has touted the convenience and practicality of a smaller screen, but in truth most consumers prefer a larger screen. Whether it be browsing websites, playing a game of Angry Birds, or watching videos on YouTube, by and large people prefer a big screen. In this department, Apple is lacking. The next iPhone needs to be at least 4.8″ or larger in order to keep up with the competition. The fact the iPhone 5 featured a modest screen size increase was surprising (and disappointing) to many consumers, even if the total sales didn’t show it.
3) Cheaper iPads
As far as tablets go, the iPad is definitely the most popular device. This popularity has allowed Apple to charge a premium compared to many other tablets, which hasn’t really hurt sales, yet. At a certain point, however, the company would reach a greater market by offering more affordable tablets. A huge price cut wouldn’t be necessary, nor would they have to slash prices across the board. Having a barebones, entry level model could suffice. Rumors are buzzing that the company is under pressure to release cheaper versions of the iPhone and iPad, possibly as low as $200 for an iPad Mini. If they do create a cheaper version of the iPad or iPad Mini, the biggest problem would be product shortages since such a device would likely sell out extremely quickly.
Like the iTV, the rumored Apple iWatch is the type of innovative product that Apple has been known for. There is still the possibility that this device could be on the horizon, and perhaps even release later this year. One thing is for certain – an iWatch would generate a ton of news and put Apple on the front of blogs, tech sites, and everything else in between. Of course, the usefulness of one of these watches is subjective, but I imagine this type of product would be extremely popular and the next “thing to have,” for many technology aficionados. More than anything else, it would create a hype and sensation that has been strangely lacking from Apple for awhile now.
5) Apple Glasses
Why let Google have all the fun? Google Glasses are going to be one of the coolest products to hit the market in a long time, and you would think other companies will want to get in on the action. Apple could capitalize on this innovation by making their own version of glasses. We know how awesome these would be for your everyday consumer, but it’s also worthwhile to think of how it could change the way we experience everything from sporting events and concerts, to education and learning. With such a tremendous product, Apple would be foolish to not at least consider the implications and business opportunity such a device could present.
