If you are looking for a pleasant weekend getaway in the Midwest, take a drive to Nashville, Indiana located in the south central part of the state. The region is home to the Brown County State Park and is filled with plenty of family-friendly activities.
The immediate appeal of Nashville is its quaint and unique shops. These small stores line both sides of the main street (Van Buren Street) and sell everything from old-fashion candy to high-quality leather products. But, don’t limit yourself to Van Buren Street because plenty of small, interesting stores are located within a block or two of Van Buren.
The town is filled with plenty of dining choices, but one of the best places to get pizza is Big Woods Pizza Co. Try their margherita pizza — with its mozzarella, roma tomatoes and basil topping — and you will not be disappointed. I have eaten margherita-style pizzas in several places, including New York City, and the one at Big Woods is absolutely the best I’ve had.
The only dining issue my family has faced in Nashville is finding a good breakfast, which seems odd, since it should be an easy meal to fix. But in the handful of places we have eaten breakfast, we have always been somewhat disappointed.
Things to Do
Big Woods is also one of several places that offer live entertainment. While we were waiting on our pizza, we enjoyed a musical performance by two women — one on acoustic guitar, the other on violin (or fiddle since it was country). But, the town has plenty more entertainment options, including a playhouse which recently performed Steel Magnolias and the Artist Colony Inn which frequently host murder mystery dinners.
Places to Stay
There are plenty of places to stay in Brown County. If you are the outdoors type, the Brown County State Park is about one mile away. If you prefer a hotel there are a couple on the edge of town and a trolley makes regular stops to bring you to the downtown shops. In our most recent stay we spent the night in the Hidden Valley Inn located near the end of Van Buren Street. The Inn is a reasonably-priced condominium, complete with a kitchenette, refrigerator, a sitting room, bedroom and balcony/porch area.
Before heading out, plan ahead. The activity schedule for Brown County and Nashville varies significantly throughout the year. But, regardless of when you arrive, relax, because you will feel like time has slowed down — at least for a little while.
