In the past ten years, there has been a major rise in the attraction to reality shows. It seems that the majority of television shows today are reality shows rather than actual script led, directed, and produced shows with professional actors and actresses.
Many people believed that when reality television first started gaining some recognition, that it would have its fifteen minutes and be phased out. However, it looks like reality television is here to stay and those who are involved in successful shows have become extremely successful and very wealthy. Many reality television stars are cashing in on their fame by writing books, starting clothing lines, and creating perfume and makeup brands. It seems that the more drama that these reality stars are involved in, the more money they make and the more their popularity rises allowing their products to sell fast.
A lot of people say that they are tiring of reality shows, however the ratings are proving different. Reality shows continued to dominate the ratings last summer among viewers ages 18 to 49. Fifteen of the top twenty highest-rated programs among young adult groups were reality or unscripted shows. When Jersey Shore was still on the air, it had more than 4.4 million views, which was more than any other television program.
Many reality shows have become so successful that the salaries being paid to the stars of these shows can compete with high paid actors and actresses. Some of the most successful reality shows are Dancing With the Stars, Big Brother, The Real Housewives, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, The Voice, Teen Mom, and so many more. As much as people are saying that they are tired of reality shows, the ratings prove that we love them and are definitely watching them.
An issue that is often raised with the increased popularity of reality shows is their negative influence on society. Many of these shows promote excessive partying, sexual promiscuity, scandal, and having children in high school. It seems that with the lack of morals and proper conduct amongst our youth, these reality shows are actually contributing negatively to their progression as they venture into adulthood. Many of the actions that are viewed on these shows should be scoffed at, however we continue to make these individuals rich and famous for their outlandish behavior. It seems that we are simply entertained by the wayward actions of these reality stars.
