Thermal underwear bottoms provide reliable winter protection, but eventually they become ratty and torn. Old thermal bottoms can be recycled in several useful ways. Thermal cloth does not unravel much or fray so there is no need to hem cut ends. This article will look at how to recycle old thermal bottoms.
Reuse the cut legs as warmers. In most cases, there will be leftover cut-offs at least from the knee down. These cut-off thermal legs can be turned into leg warmers by adding a piece of cloth with which to hold them up. Alternatively, they can be sewn to the inside of pants or sweatshirt sleeves to add an additional layer. Sew the cuff to the cuff of the shirt to prevent it from sliding out and becoming visible. When the thermal underwear is not ripped at the knees, the legs can be cut higher up. This allows for longer and fuller leg warmers. If the waist area of the thermal is busted, the legs might be the part that is being salvaged.
Cut the thermal underwear into shorts. Thermal underwear ripped at the knees can be cut into knee-length shorts. If there are no rips at the knees, they can be cut to capri length. Cutting the thermals to shorts allows for making an under layer that is cooler and useful on warmer days in winter or used with leg warmers.
Cut the thermal underwear into undershorts. Undershorts are made by cutting the shorts to a length about three to six inches shorter than normal shorts. They can be then worn under normal shorts. This is useful for wearing shorts on days that are too cold to wear shorts on normally.
Make a pair of boxer briefs. Cut the thermal halfway between the knee and the waist to make it into a pair of boxer briefs. Use in place of normal boxer briefs. Thermal boxer briefs are heavier in material and therefore are only good in winter. The cloth does not curl and is not visible under pants. The cut end is generally more comfortable than a hem.
Make a pair of briefs. Cut the legs of the thermal off right at the inside base of the leg, and angle the cut upwards to cut through the outside about three inches below the elastic. Sew together the first inch on either side of the middle, to replicate the seam on a normal brief and prevent the brief from shifting to the side. If the legs are good, reuse as perfect leg warmers.
Thermal underwear unfit for reuse can be turned into cleaning rags and used for multiple purposes. So no matter what the condition of the thermal underwear bottoms, there is always a way to use them.
