Family vacations are often a go-go-go situation, but with young kids especially you need some down time. Most families also end up at the hotel in the evenings after a day of activity. Kids sometimes go a little stir crazy sitting in a hotel room. Here are some ideas for keeping your kids entertained at the hotel.
Quiet Games and Activities
You can’t get too wild and crazy in a hotel room unless you want the neighbors to complain to the front desk. Instead, pack some quiet games and activities your kids can do in the room. Since you won’t likely have much room, choose small games that won’t take up a lot of space. Travel versions of board games or card games like Go Fish and Old Maid work well.
Another option is low-mess craft idea. Consider a coloring book with markers or colored pencils. Stickers and a notebook also work well. Skip activities with lots of small pieces, like puzzles. There’s a good chance you’ll leave a few pieces behind.
Need to stretch your legs a little? Take your kids on a tour of the hotel. It won’t take long if you’re staying a small facility, but the kids will still have fun exploring the lobby, pool, exercise room and outdoor areas. Don’t be afraid to let your kids stop and explore. And don’t forget how much fun elevators can be to young kids. Make the tour more fun by using your best cheesy tour guide voice.
The amenities vary significantly from one hotel to the next. Check out the options at the place you’re staying. A dip in the pool is a good way to relax and have fun with kids. Some hotels might have an outdoor play area or at least an open patch of grass where you can play a game of tag or catch.
Resorts typically offer more activities than smaller activities. Check with the front desk to see if the hotel offers any kids programs or entertainment. You’ve already paid for the room. You might as well get as much out of the stay as possible.
Are you staying at a hotel with other friends or family members? For some reason, kids love to visit other hotel rooms even if they’re right next door. Take a stroll down the hallway and visit your friends to pass the time.
