A rainy day is a great time to snuggle up with a good book, but don’t let the whole day go by without any physical activity. Kids can still get exercise even with the rain limits play opportunities. Get moving with one of these rainy day exercise options.
Dance in the Rain
Before you keep your kids outside, consider a romp in the rain. As long as there is no lightening or other dangerous weather conditions, there’s no reason to keep your keeps cooped up indoors. Head outside and take a family walk in the rain. Splash in the puddles. Dance in the rain. Kids don’t get to play in the rain often so this is a nice treat for them. Just make sure to put warm, dry clothes on when you get back inside.
Indoor Obstacle Course
Take advantage of the features inside to make a mini obstacle course. Stairs, furniture and pillows all work to create the obstacles. You might have your kids run down the stairs, weave through a row of kitchen chairs, run around the kitchen island, jump over pillows on the floor and jump onto the couch as the finish line. Get creative with the obstacles. Or let the kids set up their own obstacles. Just keep an eye out for safety so the obstacles don’t put the kids at a major risk for injury.
Kid Boot Camp
Make them drop and give you 20. Traditional exercise doesn’t have to be boring. Lead a fun kid-style boot camp with jumping jacks, push-ups and sit-ups. Give the exercises funny names to make them more appealing. Let the kids have a turn being the boot camp leader.
Don’t want to dance in the rain? Crank up the tunes indoors and have a living room dance party. Dancing might not seem like exercise, but you can really work up a sweat when you find your groove. Choose upbeat songs that really get the kids moving. Don’t be a wallflower. Get dancing yourself so you get your daily exercise despite the rain.
Rainy weather doesn’t have to stop your exercise routine. With a few simple changes, your kids still get plenty of physical activity whether or not Mother Nature cooperates.
