Water storage is one of the most valuable things a prepper should think about just in case a natural disaster were to take place. It’s recommended that you have at least one and half gallons of drinking water stored in your home for each of your family members to be on the safe side, so that way if water were to stop coming out of your faucet you will be able to hydrated.
Storing water is one way to prevent water shortage in case of an emergency. The most common way that preppers store water is in a fifty-five gallon tank in their basement or in another secure location in your home. Keep in mind that there are different sizes of water tanks available if you are short on space and or just find that it would be too much work to move the water to a different location. They also have collapsible water containers that are affordable and easy to move if you have to relocate. You can also purchase a huge amount of water bottles and store them in various places around your house.
Be sure you know where to find water just in case your water storage runs low. Think of all the places in your neighborhood where you could find water and then know how you will transport the water in case your car runs out of gas or is unusable for whatever reason. Consider using a wagon or better yet a back pack if you prefer to be more discreet. Serious preppers will buy a few rain barrels to keep outside, so that way if it rains they can replenish their water supply.
Before you can consume the water you will need to filter it and then purify it. You can easily find water filters at department stores or online. Then you just place the screen over the opening of the container and pour the water in into it. Then to purify it you can use special tablets that can be use to kill the bacteria, but if you don’t have those your best bet would be to boil the water for five minutes. Or you can use some regular bleach that isn’t scented. Pour in one fourth of a teaspoon into a one gallon container and then wait about thirty five minutes before drinking it. If using a rain barrel you will need to be sure to purify the water before you drink it and don’t forget to filter it first.
