When a pregnancy is desired but not achievable through normal efforts, one must look at alternative methods. There are several methods available to individuals who require additional assistance. If you are in a relationship where a pregnancy is desired but not achievable, check out these options and discuss them with your doctor.
Reversible Tubal Ligation’s and Vasectomies – Some couples have had permanent measures taken to ensure that they do not have any more children. These surgeries are often permanent. There are options to try and reverse these procedures. While at times the surgeries are successful, it is more common that the surgeries are not a success.
Surrogate Pregnancy– For some couples who have exhausted other options or are unable to have a viable pregnancy. These situations should require legal representations as they are extremely involved and involve a third party. In surrogate pregnancy’s, the couple may or may not choice to utilize their own biological matter. The surrogate comes into play when the selected egg and sperm combination are placed in the surrogate’s uterus. She will carry and deliver the baby for the couple. This scenario can be complicated; you may want to exhaust all other efforts first.
Donor Insemination– The couple or an Individual may select to use donor sperm to become pregnant. There are two types of donor sperm or eggs, one would be from a known source and the other would be from an unknown source through a fertility bank. While many may feel that a known donor would be best, it is necessary to know that in the future, the known donor may attempt to gain some type of parentage. It does require that the partie(s) take into consideration of all future possibilities.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)- Sperm is directly injected into the uterus. There are a variety of possibilities as to why this is needed but the two most common reasons would be the viability of the partner’s sperm or a lesbian couple who wish to use their own eggs and a donor sperm.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)- includes the use of fertility drugs that invoke the ovaries to create and mature eggs to be considered for use. Once matured, the eggs are removed and joined with the sperm. After 3-5 days, the most viable and beautiful combinations up to a certain limit are implanted into the uterus to hopefully development into a viable pregnancy.
The desire to have a child and increase you family is often a typical dream of many individuals. When one has to go to alternate lengths to become pregnant, there are often many fears and stressful times to be experienced.
I fully understand this avenue as my wife and I went to great lengths to add an additional child to our already established family. My wife had two children from a prior marriage and had a tubal ligation. My wife and I went through a variety of the above measures before finally selecting IVF as the most logical option. We experienced many pitfalls and miscarriages before finally finding success. The best advice I can offer is that no matter what choice you make, seek counseling to help cope with the ongoing process and stress that comes with it. My wife and I knew that we didn’t need it but in hindsight, we now know that it was really a necessary addition. The stress really complicates matters and it takes a very strong relationship to survive. Today, we are a happy and healthy family.
