If you really want to give something of yourself, to help out others in need, volunteering is something you just might want to consider. Not only does volunteering occupy your free time and this may very well be what you are looking to do but it also fulfills you with a sense of contentment knowing that you made a difference in someones life.
It could be simple as volunteering at your church, there is always so much going on you are sure to be welcome with open arms. If you enjoy kids there is the children’s bible study or different trips that they take. There are the adult bible studies for both men and women where there is need of setting up the room with tables and chairs, water and coffee, possibly cookies and napkins to go along. All of these minor details make the experience such a pleasure for those attending and usually there will be thanks given at the end or your help in making the evening a wonderful turn out.
If you have an old folks home near you there is always something going on there where a volunteer would be most welcome. Even if there is no event a visit to a resident that maybe gets few visitors would welcome a visit from you. What a great gift of companionship to sit and talk or listen to them share their life with you. This can be a very satisfying experience for some.
In some cities they hold an event one night during the week which in my town is called the farmer’s market. It is a great place to go walking around to check out what the different vendors have to offer. I recently starting making my own bar soap and the last farmers market I went to had a booth where a lady was selling her soap and various products. They can always use a hand at these events even if it is at the end of the night helping them pack up their supplies. Sometimes you are rewarded the the extra product they don’t want to take home, usually this is fruits and vegetables.
Another way to volunteer is at your local schools especially if you have children attending them. There are trips, special events and other activities going on where they can always use an extra hand. After school events, book club events and a big event is the 5th grade trip where they go to camp for a week. I always thought it would be a great trip for my children to volunteer for when they go into high school because they could relate to these children some who are very frightened about leaving their family behind.
Yes, there are rewards to be had volunteering and it is only limited to your imagination as to where you can offer your time and efforts. It definitely gives something to others and in turn gives something back to you.
