Tulsa is known for the excellent Art Deco architecture featured in and on its many downtown buildings, as well as its Native American heritage. The art culture has taken a cue from both and ran with them, creating a scene that features old and new art alike, from both local and international artists.
Although Tulsa is a smaller city than most, it boasts many galleries and museums that bring visitors from across the globe to delight in what the city has to offer.
Located on 51st Street, Lovetts is a small gallery that holds exhibitions for artists from far and wide. The work featured is more than exquisite, which explains the owner, Jack Summer’s excellent eye for detail. Open Monday through Saturday from 10-6, the gallery also offers museum-quality framing as well as other services such as private viewings. Parking isn’t a problem.
Joseph Gierek Fine Art
Gierek’s gallery features an eclectic mix of artists with a wide variety of talents. From modern and abstract to classic and pastoral, the work exhibited is without a doubt, breathtaking. Gierek’s is situated on 11th Street which also happens to be historic Route 66. Parking can be an issue if an exhibition is scheduled. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
M.A. Doran Gallery
Like the other galleries listed, Doran’s hosts an amazing amount of artwork. The gallery gives time for new artists to showcase their work as well as to those who are more established. A smaller gallery than most, Doran’s is at 35th and Peoria and open from 10:30am to 6pm Tuesday through Saturday, with parking not an issue.
This fun little place, in the heart of Tulsa’s Blue Dome district, features all types of work from local and other national artists as well as holds exhibitions. Area artists are able to sell and feature a variety of their handicrafts such as the ever-popular Cuddle Monsters. It’s a whimsical shop and gallery that brings out the playful side in all of us. Dwelling Spaces is open every weekday and parking varies depending on the time of day.
No matter who you are or where you are from, Tulsa’s art scene is extent and varied. The art is as unique as the citizens that live in this lovely city. With its rich history and love of everything artistic, Tulsa shines light on the fact that it can compete with the best of them.
