A friend from Colorado was flying across the country to go to an anime convention with my husband and me. I admired him and wanted to surprise him by wearing the costume of a character he made on his web show. Unfortunately, the only shirt I could find was a men’s medium. I had to lose enough weight to lose two sizes in six months. We were lucky to have a gym at the apartment complex and I worked out every day; 30 minutes on the elliptical and short weight lifting sessions for my arms, legs, and core. Exercise is the most important part of losing weight. I could not just diet and lose weight.
My diet was what really made a difference in losing some weight but mostly inches off of my stomach. I ate vegan. People who I knew were vegans and got some exercise were in great shape. I was not super strict about it but anything I knew had animal products in it was off limits. I had an apple and nuts in the morning, hummus and crackers as a snack, a huge salad with vinaigrette dressing for lunch, and usually something easy for dinner like a veggie burger, grilled tofu, or stir-fry. I did not overthink being vegan and mostly ate raw fruits and vegetables when I did not have time to put something together. I was hungry sometimes but it was usually around the time I should eat something like a meal or a snack. Once I got used to the diet, the thought of eating chicken made me a little sick and even the smell of jerky was enough to make me gag.
I was able to fit into the shirt within four months but then I stopped eating vegan. I gained back enough that the shirt barely could not fit. I showed it to my friend during the convention, near tears that I could not button it. He laughed and told me he was still proud of me for what I did keep off.
Veganism takes time when it comes to making the switch but it is possible. I felt better on a vegan diet but what got to me was blue cheese and seafood. Giving those up full time would take a miracle. However I will never go back to drinking or using cow’s milk when I can use soy. Soy milk is delicious!
