Commentary | The groups of pro-Russian Ukrainian citizens seem to believe that they are still Russian Citizens, and so does President Vladimir Putin, as outlined in the FPI’s fact sheet. The marches in the United States celebrating Cinco de Mayo have a vaguely similar tone. Are US citizens celebrating their Mexican heritage or are they standing firm in their loyalties to Mexico. What would happen if the relationship between the US and Mexico were to suddenly disintegrate? Where would citizens’ loyalties lie?
Why are there more Cinco de Mayo day celebrations in the US than in Mexico, and is it even significant? More disturbing is the banning of the presentation of the US flag on Cinco de Mayo in certain areas. Why is there a need to separate the two? If we are all US citizens, we should enjoy equal rights. All Americans should support one another and it shouldn’t offend anyone which flag someone waves or when they wave it.
All US citizens are suppose to be protected by the same rights, but it appears that certain rights are set aside to protect select groups of individuals showing partiality to those with like minded thinking. Where will these types of actions lead us? They are very dangerous in the long run. Partiality often leads to resentment and contempt of laws and law makers.
When a nation’s long term citizens’ rights are placed beneath other, newer citizens’ rights to avoid some perceived offense, then the inconsistency of justice may grow resentments and mistrust. If our Congressional members, Supreme Court Justices and President cannot practice complete impartiality, then they need to step down and let someone lead who will treat all with true equality.
I do not believe that a similar crisis, to the Ukrainian one, would ever happen here. We are too like minded, in all the important ways, to both our neighbors to the south and the north. Our Mexican and Canadian friends and family have great pride in their heritages, just as we all do. Americans can and often do trace their ancestry to countries and nationalities all across the globe. There are: Irish – ST Patrick’s Day, Scottish festivals, German villages, Chinese – New Year’s, and many other ethnic and international celebrations all across this great nation. We should embrace each and every one.
