Going to the salon is a treat but when you just want a few wispy bangs added, spending money for a haircut can seem kind of ridiculous. If you want to trim your bangs at home, you should use the twist technique. You can easily texture bangs and avoid a potential hair cut disaster. If your hair looks a bit thick or a little long, this technique will whip your fringe into shape. As professional stylist, I can show you how to add this cutting style to your repertoire.
Master the Twist Technique
Before you cut your hair, make sure it is completely dry. It’s always a good idea to wash your hair before a cut but it needs to be free of moisture before you put scissors to it. Cutting wet hair will always leave your hair looking shorter than you probably want.
Use a rat tail comb to make a part separating your bangs from the rest of your hair. If you have long hair, gather the back portion into a ponytail. For shorter hair, an alligator clip is perfect for keeping these two sections separate. Comb out the bangs to remove any tangles. If you have curly hair and plan to wear your bangs straight, slide a flat iron over the hair to get the flat, straight look.
Here comes the fun part: Comb the bangs forward then grasp the ends together and twist them. Twist them three to four times. Try not to pull your hair while you twist or you could end up with short hair. Keep the bangs at the center of your nose.
Now reach for the hairstyling scissors and start snipping. For longer bangs, make the cut where your hair meets the middle of your nose. For shorter bangs, snip the hair about 1 inch higher than the center of your nose. Release the hair and brush the loose hairs away. If you want to go shorter, retwist and cut. Continue until you get the length you want.
Comb out the hair to remove the loose pieces. Arrange your fringe with your fingers. Now here’s the last step. Turn your scissors so the blades are facing vertically and cut into the hair. This will give you a textured finish. That’s it! Simple right?
For a good blend of bangs and hair, pull a few long pieces of hair forward and trim them. This will help blend your bangs into your hairstyle.
