It’s Father’s Day and that means it’s time to whip up some fresh summer drinks for dad while he lounges by the TV or the pool. We took inspiration from five favorite TV shows to come up with sampling of signature cocktails suitable for dad on his special day. And don’t worry, there’s not a Duff beer in the house!
Old Fashioned, Mad Men
Mad Men’s Don Draper may drink too much, but his retro cocktail of choice never goes out of style. Draper makes his Old Fashioned with bitters, sugar, water and rye whiskey, but you can sub out the rye for your bourbon of choice. Garnishes include a cherry and orange slice and a lemon wedge. Find the official recipe here, courtesy of AMC.
Who says martinis are girly? On Scrubs, daydreaming doc John Dorian (Zach Braff) has a penchant for bright green appletinis. Of course, J.D. is always sure to specify “easy on the tini.” For a quick and easy appletini, shake 1 1/2 oz Smirnoff Green Apple Twist vodka and 1 oz DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker schnapps over ice.
Hardy Boy, 30 Rock
Speaking of “girly” drinks, 30 Rock‘s Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) switched his scotch for something lighter when he ordered a white rum with diet ginger ale and a splash of lime at a bar. CC Cunningham (Edie Falco) joked that she would never have pegged him for “a University of Tennessee sorority girl” right before the bartender served up this zinger: “Here’s your Nancy Drew.” Of course, Jack had his own name for the concoction: “For men, it’s called a Hardy Boy,” he said.
Minty Mojito, Burn Notice
Burn Notice’s Commander Samuel Axe makes a mean minty mojito. This favorite drink of the former Navy SEAL takes a lot of work, but to do this right you must muddle mint leaves, then add light rum, lime wedges, simple syrup and seltzer. Look for the detailed instructions here, because hey, isn’t dad worth the extra effort?
Earl Grey Iced Tea, Star Trek: The Next Generation
We didn’t leave the teetotalers out! Non-alcohol drinkers can enjoy this twist on the drink that Captain Jean-Luc Picard made famous on Star Trek: the Next Generation. While Jean-Luc enjoyed his tea piping hot (check out his brand on the official Star Trek online store), you make offer dad a cold one, thanks to Food Network guru Giada DeLaurentis. Giada’s recipe infuses a simple syrup with brewed tea and sparkling water. And don’t forget the lemons!
