Dry eyes can be symptomatic of serious eye conditions, for this reason home remedies are inadvisable if you are experiencing dry eyes for the first time. If you have visited your eye doctor and know the reason for your eyes being dry then you may be able to proceed with home treatments.
Remember that in every case it is wise to know what is causing dry eyes. Dry eyes left untreated can lead to scarring. This is not something to take lightly. That being said there are some things you can do when you are experiencing dry eyes.
One of the first things is to turn off your computer or other electronic devices that you may be using. Using a computer or other electronic device can lead to dry eyes. The reason is because when you stare at an electronic screen you may not blink as often as needed. In addition to turning off your electronic screen you can forcefully remind yourself to look away from the screen and to blink and regular intervals. Blinking helps remove dust from your eyes, and helps lubricate your eyes with the tears already in your eyes.
Something else you will want to avoid if you suffer from dry eyes, even if you don’t really, is air blowing in directly in your face. Air from a fan, or a heat and air unit may feel nice depending on the outside temperatures. However that same air has a drying effect whether it is cool air or hot air or warm air.
Removing the source of a potential problem is easier than trying to treat the problem after the fact. Although in some cases just removing the source of the problem will clear up the problem.
Using over the counter eye drops can be helpful for some people who have problems with dry eyes. There are many different brands to choose from, the brand that I use was recommended to me by my eye doctor. I have experience with it and it works well for me. The brand I use is called Systane Ultra lubricating drops.
Taking a shower and washing your face will also help dry eyes. The warm water removes pollens and other allergens you may have accumulated throughout the day. Removing what causes dry itchy eyes is may prove helpful.
Consistent dry eyes warrants a visit to an ophthalmologists as this may save your eyesight.
