Before you head off to college you need to know exactly what you need to take with you. Some items are essential, and other items you don’t really need. In the year 2014, the things that you need could have changed, since times do quickly change. Below you will find the top ten items for first time college students which are often forgotten.
Item # 1: Shelves
Hanging shelves are really best for a college dorm room. Just make sure that it is OK to hang items on the wall of your dorm room before you buy the shelves. You can also get the type of shelves that easily clip on to the edge of your bed. If you can do hanging shelves this would give you a lot more space that you are going to need since dorm rooms are small.
Item # 2: First Aid Kit
The first aid kit is something that all college students need. They will not be able to call mom and dad if they accidentally cut their finger, or hurt themselves. College will be the first time, that they are in a position where they have to completely care for themselves. A simple first aid kit would work perfect. The basic ones that you can get at Walmart will work well. They will even include some burn cream, and also some headache medicine that is sure to be needed at some point.
Item # 3: Desk Lamp
The lamp desk is a college dorm must have. You will have lots of work to get done, and most dorm rooms don’t have enough lighting for you to be able to get work done. A simple clamp on desk lamp works well just make sure that it has enough wattage to be bright enough to work.
Item # 4: Can Opener
One small item that is often forgotten is the can opener. In college there will be a lot of canned goods being eaten unless you have a ton of money. So be sure that you pack a can opener for those in between budget meals.
Item #5: Sheet and Comforter Set
You may not want to take along the cartoon themed sheet set that you have had since your elementary school days. A more mature looking sheet set will help you to feel grown up, and a lot more mature. During back to school shopping time you can find plenty of these items on sale at your local Walmart, or Target store for a very reasonable price. If they are offering these items at the dollar store I would recommend you skip them, since they will not last long.
Item # 6: Mattress Topper
If you want to be sure that you get a goods night rest, than you want to have a mattress topper. A mattress topper can make any mattress including an air mattress feel comfortable. Remember if you are not able to get a good night’s sleep, you will not be able to fully focus on your grades.
Item # 7: Under Bed Storage Bins
One thing that is often forgotten is making sure that you have enough storage space. Using all the space you have is best. Try putting the long flat storage bins under the bed. This way you can store items that you may need on a daily basis, especially if you don’t have a lot of closet space.
Item # 8: Folding Laundry Baskets
Instead of the hard, rolling laundry baskets, the folding laundry baskets are a lot better. This way when you are finished with your laundry you can store the laundry basket under the bed or in the closet. In addition to the fact that the laundry baskets are a lot cheaper.
Item # 9: Alarm Clock
An Alarm clock is definitely a must, although most people now use their cell phones as the alarm clock. They also have an iPhone desk alarm clock. You can place your phone into a little box plug in your phone, and help you to be able to see it what time it is when you need to.
Item # 10: Mattress Cover
A mattress cover that keeps bugs out is a must. One thing that many colleges have had a problem with over the last few years is bug issues. Making sure that your mattress has a bug barrier will help to ensure you don’t have to spend more money on another mattress. You will also want to make sure that you are able to sleep well.
