Having a sore throat is a miserable feeling. It makes the throat burn and feel uncomfortable. It also makes it scratchy. When it is severe enough, a sore throat can even cause difficulty swallowing. Here are a few remedies to relieve your sore throat:
Gargle With Warm Salt Water
A sore throat is due to swelling and inflammation of the mucous membranes. The salt removes water from the cells, causing them to shrink. It also flushes the irritants and relieves the pain. Salt loosens up the mucus, so that your nose drains properly. For best results, gargle every 4 hours. Just add 1/2 teaspoon salt, to a cup of warm water.
Lozenges And Sprays
Cough drops help with the production of saliva. This helps keep your throat moist. It is best to use a cough drop with menthol or eucalyptus. It helps to numb or soothe the pain. Over-the-counter sprays, such as Chloraseptic, also numb the pain. Suck on a lozenge, every two hours, to get rid of the soreness.
Add 2 drops of eucalyptus oil, to a bowl of hot, steamy water. Then, cover your head with a towel to keep the steam in. Another option is to run a humidifier in your bedroom. It helps keep the air from drying out. It also helps prevent the drying out of your throat lining.
Licorice root helps to treat a sore throat. It soothes the throat and reduces coughing. It also helps eliminate phlegm and mucous in the nose, throat, and lungs. Gargling with licorice and water, is more effective than with just water.
