Sports have been something we enjoy, but maybe are not the best at. Video games allow people to enjoy a game without expensive equipment or the skills of the actual game and have a good time. There are five franchises that are leading the sport game franchise. These games include; Madden, NBA Live, NHL Series, FIFA, and MLB 2k.
Often a teenager’s favorite game, one they can play with their father without extensive time being used to teach him the complex concepts. Madden has been around for many years and always seems to keep selling until 2008. In 2001, Madden sold 1.2 million copies on the PS2 in the United States alone. Then in 2006, Madden sold a whopping 5.12 million copies with the most being sold on the PS2. The sales then suddenly started decreasing. Madden in 2013 sold 1.6 million copies in the first week, a huge decrease from its peak in 2006.
NBA Live executive producer Sean O’Brien who oversaw the creation of the newest NBA Live has created a disaster game. Gamers around the world complained that the game ruined NBA games for them. EA is facing a hard week with constant badgering from unsatisfied customers. Could this be the downfall of NBA? EA CEO Andrew Wilson is very apologetic and seeks to fix this issue with upcoming game patches. But will gamers be willing to wait for these patches? Before 2013, NBA was a very popular game, right next to Madden. But after 2013, the game series took a serious blow.
The National Hockey League Series video game was popular back in the 90s for the players being able to fight in the middle of the rink. Back then blood was still enabled until the early 2000s where you were no longer able to fight nor was there blood to make it a more kid oriented game. NHL 14 decreased even more in sales and falls behind in the race to the dependable Madden and FIFA.
For some reason, FIFA is one of the top sport games in the world. So many people still play and are willing to buy the next version of the game even though there are only slight modifications to the graphics. But this year they added Pure Shot which is a new modification to the game to make it feel more real and give the player the satisfaction and exhilaration of scoring a goal. This new addition could help FIFA stay up with its rival Madden.
MLB “The Show” is the newest installment of the series of MLB video games. So many people are excited for the new game, but at the same time worried about it being a letdown. One reason they think this is because Sony has failed to announce a release date. No release date makes gamers wonder if it’s a fake. Sony is expected to sell a lot of copies mainly because they face no competition from any other company. Sony is releasing the game about 5 months after the PS4 releases to be sure all bugs are worked out. This could really benefit in the long run while other companies may rush their games to the market before they’re ready.
Overall, FIFA and Madden once again take the lead of the Best Sport Video Game Franchise. If I had to choose one it would have to be Madden. Madden has been around for so many years and will continue to be a fan favorite.
