COMMENTARY | When most professional wrestling fans think of the greatest factions in history, stables such as The Four Horsemen and the NWO come to mind. However, a select few all-female factions have also left a lasting impression on the pro wrestling industry. Take a look back at the top five female wrestling factions in history.
5. Beautiful Fierce Females
When the WWE Network launched in late February, wrestling fans were introduced to this NXT female faction. The Beautiful Fierce Females (or “BFFs” for short) consist of Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Summer Rae. The heel faction actually formed in 2013 when Charlotte aligned herself with Banks and Rae. With Charlotte’s lineage as Ric Flair’s daughter and Summer Rae appearing on Total Divas, the future is bright for the Beautiful Fierce Females.
4. Extreme Expose’
The WWE tried to recapture the magic of the WCW Nitro Girls with Extreme Expose’ with only limited success. The female dance trio of Brooke, Kelly Kelly, and Layla were primarily dancing instead of wrestling in 2007. It also didn’t help that Extreme Expose’ was on ECW instead of more visible WWE shows such as Raw and Smackdown. Once the faction disbanded, all three members experienced much greater success as individual female wrestlers.
3. Pretty Mean Sisters
The Pretty Mean Sisters (or “PMS” for short) date back to the WWE Attitude Era. The late 1990s was the height of creativity in the WWE when nothing was taboo in wrestling, even a faction consisting of all females. Jacqueline, Ryan Shamrock, and Goldust’s former wife Terri made up this provocative faction. Their storylines included falsely claiming that Terri was pregnant by Val Venis and enslaving Stan Stasiak’s son, Meat. The female faction disbanded in 1999.
2. The Nitro Girls
The Nitro Girls helped attract a large portion of the all-important 18-35 male demographic to WCW in the 1990s. Originally designed as a dance group, several of The Nitro Girls later got involved in other aspects of pro wrestling. Diamond Dallas Page’s wife Kimberly was originally the leader of the group. However, Stacy Keibler is the most famous Nitro Girl. For five years, The Nitro Girls captured a vibe in WCW that never died, long outlasting the NWO.
1. The Beautiful People
The Beautiful People proved that a female faction could succeed in wrestling without having to dance to entertain male fans. Angelina Love and Velvet Sky got over as heels that fans couldn’t help but love. Later, Madison Rayne and Lacey Von Erich joined, making The Beautiful People an official faction. With the return of Rayne and Love to TNA in 2014, wrestling fans are hoping The Beautiful People reunite. Not only are The Beautiful People easily the greatest female wrestling faction in history, they are also one of the greatest factions overall in TNA history.
Endnote on The Beautiful People
Although Cute Kip briefly joined The Beautiful People, I refuse to let his temporary status in the faction disqualify the group from being classified as a female wrestling faction.
