As the snow is melting, the days are getting warmer, and the sun is staying out late into the evenings, spring fever is officially among us and that calls for a celebration! Sit out on your patio, bask in the sunshine, and pop open one of these refreshing spring beers. Each of these unique craft beers can be purchased at many locations nationwide in a 6-pack for just around $10, so go on and give them a try!
1. Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat
As the sunsets start to get later, celebrate the extra hours of sunlight with the ever-refreshing Sunset Wheat beer. This beer, brewed at the Leinenkugel Brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, has tart hints of citrus and blueberry, standing out among layers of wheat and hops. The Belgian-style beer has won awards at The Great American Beer Festival and The World Beer Cup for its unforgettable flavor and aroma. The light citrus undertones serve as a perfectly refreshing companion when you tackle your spring cleaning. Leinenkugel brews many seasonal beers, including its unique range of summer shandies, but luckily the Sunset Wheat is available year round. The beer is available in 6 packs and can be found on tap (garnished with an orange wheel, of course!) in select locations.
2. Horny Goat Watermelon Wheat
Not only does Horny Goat Brewing Co.have one of the funniest company names, but they also produce some of the most unique craft beers. The goofy name draws you in, but the incomparable flavors keep you coming back for more. The real watermelons that are used during fermentation are balanced with wheat and Vienna malt, giving it just a hint of watermelon for a very refreshing finish. If you happen to be in Milwaukee, check out the Horny Goat brew pub, called the Horny Goat Hideaway, for great food and drink specials and to try the Watermelon Wheat on tap. Pick up a 6 pack in select locations and share with your friends- you’ll all have a good chuckle and enjoy a bittersweet, refreshing beer.
3. Samuel Adams Irish Red
As a true lover of Irish red ales, I must say that Sam Adams Irish Red ale is one of the best red ales you can get without flying to Dublin and finding a stool at the local pub. Red ales pair easily with any meal, mood, or season and luckily enough, this one is available year round. Sam Adams Brewing Company says that the Irish Red is “brewed to suit the cool rainy days”, making it perfect for those April showers! This beer uses roasted caramel malts, perfectly balanced with English hops to achieve a full and rich flavor. Pick up a 6 or 12 pack, or enjoy it in a ice cold Sam Adams glass when you see it on tap at your favorite bar. If you’re around Boston, check out the Samuel Adams brewery tours for some interesting insider information and a few samples of truly great beer.
4. Wild Blue Blueberry Lager
This blueberry lager, a product of Anheuser-Busch, fuses real blueberries with barley malt, cereal grain, and American and German hops giving it a unique and bold flavor. The beer has a powerfully sweet blueberry scent, and is deep purple in color. I’ve tried many fruit flavored beers, and this is one I keep coming back to. Wild Blue isn’t afraid to be a strong fruit beer- where others only give you a hint of a fruity sweetness, Wild Blue gives you a punch of blueberry flavor. It’s tasty and refreshing; the perfect beverage to enjoy in your lounge chair after a long day. Wild Blue is sold in 6 or 12 packs, and on draft in select locations. This beer is often garnished with cold, fresh blueberries- I strongly recommend enjoying your Wild Blue this way at home!
5. Rounder Belgian-Style Pale
Part of Blue Moon’s Expressionist Collection, this amber beer perfectly combines smooth caramel malts with bitter citrus and hibiscus flavors. Rounder Belgian-Style Pale has a hint of spiciness and an “assertive hop aroma”, according to Blue Moon. This beer serves as a nice transition from the dark, thick beers of winter to the light, more bitter beers of summer. Rounder is the perfect beer to enjoy while you tackle yard work, as you and your lawn thaw out from a long winter. Though most commonly found in the Blue Moon Spring Sampler Pack, Rounder Belgian-Style Pale is sold separately year round in 6 and 12 packs, and on draft at select bars.
So grab your friends, grab a 6-pack, and make a toast- we survived the “polar vortex” and are one step closer to summer! What beers will you be enjoying this spring?
