Spring has sprung and for the beer lovers among us, it’s time to put away the dark lagers and heavy ales for something lighter and more fragrant. With the advent of micro-brews and IBCs, along with new products from established brands, there is a long list of stunningly tasty suds to enjoy. These brews offer unique flavors and aromas which has even the harshest of beer critics raving.
A heady taste of hops is as close as your local pub, restaurant or liquor store, if you’re lucky. My chef and foodie friends have given me a taste of their favorites to enjoy when the temperatures start to heat up.
This New Zealand -based 5.0 premium brew is a lighter version of the classic Steinlager we all know and love. Manufactured by New Zealand Breweries Limited, Pure is about as pure as a beer can get. The flavor is slightly malty with a hint of hops, the golden liquid topped off with a nice foamy head.
This favorite is a staple amongst those who enjoy a slightly sweet craft beer with a hint of honey flavor. Best served via tap in a pint glass with a squeeze of fresh lemon, this is a wheaty with only a bit of heaviness. The cloudy goodness offers a hint of citrus that many find refreshing.
Abita Strawberry Harvest
A new favorite making a splash is Abita Strawberry. Its crisp and tarty goodness has people raving, especially the ladies. Although it is a high-end lager, it brings a hint of spring to the palate with its golden goodness. Most liquor stores will be more than happy to order this brand if they don’t already carry it.
Another featured product from Abita, is Andygator. Chefs love this beer for its tight flavor and the 8.0 alcohol content. This high-gravity brewed drink is hearty but not so much that it over-powers the flavor of a meal. Tread lightly as the Andygator will certainly sneak up and bite you. As a friend mentioned, “It made me shiver with delight.”
Stella Artois Cidre
Belgium makes this light but bitter beer which seems to invoke lovely notes of not only a flowery scent and apples, but a taste that is heady yet delicate. This new apple beer evokes spring and its ability to lift one up with taste is like no other. Stella is best enjoyed in the famous Stella chalice but straight out of the bottle is just as delicious.
No matter our drink of choice, a nice and light beer will encourage us to enjoy spring-time more than we already do.
