If you and your partner are talking about parenthood, this must be the most exciting time. It is also a chance to prepare, before the little one is on the way. You should prepare yourself for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Here are some important things you should do before conceiving:
Cut Back On Partying
If you indulge in smoking and drinking, start scaling back now. Drinking most nights of the week is a problem. That goes for your partner, too. Excess alcohol intake has been shown to interfere with your fertility. It can also lower sperm count in men. Smoking can affect your egg quality and your partner’s sperm. It will also increase your risk of birth defects, miscarriage, or preterm labor. No level of smoking or exposure to smoke is safe. Women who are exposed to secondhand smoke, have more problems getting pregnant than those who aren’t.
Limit Caffeine Intake
Cut back on your caffeine intake, because too much caffeine can trigger miscarriage. It is best to stop drinking coffee, to be on the safe side. Also, limit other drinks containing caffeine, such as soda, tea, or energy drink.
Shed Some Pounds
If you can stand to shed a few pounds, now is the time to go for it. It is easier to get pregnant, when you shed some weight. It will also help you have a healthier pregnancy and delivery. You will also have fewer risks and complications. You should have an exercise regimen daily. This increases the likelihood you’ll stick with it during and after pregnancy. It will also make it easier to lose the weight after the baby arrives. If you are thin, check with your doctor about whether you should gain some weight. Being too thin can affect fertility.
Set Up A Baby Fund
It is best to now save money for diapers, and all the things the baby will need. Sometimes, even pregnancy can be more costly than you’d anticipate. This is because of all those doctor’s co-pays and even maternity clothes. Start by saving $20 a week. If you have money left, you can always spend it on other baby expenses.
Take Prenatal Vitamins
You should start taking a daily multivitamin with 400 mcg of folic acid. Getting enough folic acid early on, can reduce brain and spine birth defects. The multivitamin is packed with nutrients that are crucial for a healthy pregnancy. For example, iron can prevent anemia. Be sure to take a multivitamin daily. If you start the habit now, it will make it easier to remember, once you’re expecting.
