Childhood obesity is a common problem throughout the US. Many kids have unhealthy eating patterns. They also have a more sedentary lifestyle.
A poor healthy lifestyle, starts at childhood and can continue to adulthood. Too many calories are consumed by kids, with little activity. This is why it is important for parents to teach their kids healthier eating habits. Here are a few helpful suggestions below:
Have Regular Healthy Family Meals
When serving dinner, include healthier foods. Good food choices include vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Instead of serving white bread, serve whole wheat bread. This will help your kids become use to eating healthier. For dessert, try making a fruit salad. Make favorite dishes healthier.
Avoid Eating A lot Of Fast Foods
Fast foods are high in trans fat and calories. They also have more sugar and salt. This can lead to heart disease, hypertension, and other cardiovascular problems. This is why it is much healthier to eat at home. Eating at home, will show your kids the importance of food. Eat out only on special occasions.
Purchase Low-Calorie Foods
Buy foods low in calories, but high in nutrients. This includes trail mix, oranges, 2% milk, etc. Let them know that they shouldn’t eat high-fat sweets, such as candy or cookies, daily. Give them high-fat sweets maybe once a week. This will help keep them from overeating.
Involve Them In Planning Meals
Involving them in planning meals, will help them make better food choices. Take them shopping to show them what types of foods they should choose. Encourage them to try a wide variety of foods.
