Some movies spawn video games that are based on them. Here are the top 10 video games based on movies.
1. GoldenEye 007 for N64.
GoldenEye 007 for N64 is a classic video game that came out in 1997 that is based on the 1995 James Bond movie “GoldenEye.” It is considered to be a classic and to some it’s regarded as the best N64 game ever made. It’s a first-person shooter that is so well made that it set the standards for other first-person shooters to come years later. A remake was made in 2010 but couldn’t compare to the original. It’s definitely more remembered than the movie it was based off of and goes for top dollar on eBay and other sites that sell classic video games. As a collector myself I’m not ever letting go of my copy.
2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park for Arcade.
This game is different than the other games on this list because it is a game that is featured in arcades, not a console. This game is based on the 1997 movie that had the same title as the game. The genre for this game is known as a rail shooter which consists of using a physical gun as the controller and following a specific route on screen. I remember going to the arcades with my sisters many times while younger and always seeing a line of people waiting to play this game. It is a great arcade game that has hold it’s value over the years as I occasionally still see it in various arcades to this day.
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King for PS2.
Although there were other Lord of the Rings games based on the movies this particular one, that came out in 2003, is the best. I loved this game very much and because you could play the game over again with different characters and storylines it had great replay value. The movie was fantastic but this game lets you get up close and personal to the battles that were seen in the movies. You become part of the action and see the battle through the eyes of the characters. Not every video game based on a movie is great but this is definitely one of the better ones.
4. E.T. for Atari.
If you’re confused on why the “worst game ever made” is on this list don’t be. Just the pure mystery and stories surrounding the game makes it a must have for any video game collection. Released in the same year as the movie, 1982, E.T. the video game was incomparable to the movie. The movie is now hailed as a classic but to most people who endured this awful game wish it never existed. The problems that occurred within this game include awful graphics, horrible controls, and overall just confusing gameplay. I find it comical that such a beloved movie could create a horrible video game. If you want to add this game to your collection you can easily find a copy for under a dollar on eBay. It’s definitely a conversation starter.
5. A Bug’s Life for PlayStation.
I had to add this game to the list as it was one of my personal favorites growing up. First of this game is unlike the movie and is actually a little bit hard. Based on the 1998 Disney movie of the same title you think that it would be an easy children’s game. Although it is kid-friendly ratings wise it’s a little challenging as you have to do quests which sometimes will leave you frustrated if you can’t figure them out. What I really like about this game is that you get to go deeper into the world that the movie “A Bug’s Life” takes place in. That in itself is why this movie based game is on this list.
6. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 for Wii.
Released in 2010 LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 for the Wii is one the newer titles on this list. It’s based on the first 4 Harry Potter films and it is very fun to play. First of all, all the characters within the game are LEGO characters and the game involves solving puzzles by building various LEGO pieces together. This is one of my favorite Wii games as I am a huge Harry Potter fan and this game actually lets you use the Wiimote to “cast” spells. If you enjoyed the Harry Potter books or movies I highly recommend getting this game as it transports you into the world of Harry Potter. You can easily pick this game up new for around $15 or get a used copy for around $5.
7. Kingdom Hearts for PS2.
This is the video game that made people fall in love with Disney again. This game was based off several Disney movies and it allowed you the chance to enter each of the worlds within these movies. This was one of the first games that I finished completely while growing up. Released in 2002 it came out when I was still new to playing video games seriously. Before this game I mostly played video games for fun and only had completed a couple as I would lose interest after awhile. This game proved to be so popular that it was re-released in 2013 so a new generation could experience just how amazing this game was. If you are a fan of the Final Fantasy series and a Disney fan as well I highly recommend getting this game. You won’t regret it. You can easily pick up the re-released version for 7th generation consoles for around $30 new. If you want to play this game on current generation consoles you soon will be able to as it is in development to be released with some stores accepting pre-orders already for it.
8. Spider-Man 3 for PS3.
This game is what I like to call a “showcase game”. It was the game that basically showcased what the newly released PS3 could do, especially since the lettering of the title of the game is the same lettering used for the PS3 logo. The game was released in 2007 and was based off the storyline of the movie of the same title. This game lets you become Spider-Man and although it wasn’t completely blown away by critics it’s a still a well made video game based from a movie. It’s hold it’s value as it still costs around $30 new when buying online.
9. The Godfather for Xbox 360.
Another game that has hold it’s value over the years is The Godfather for Xbox 360. Based off the 1972 movie this 2006 video game version immerses you into the world of crime boss family. What’s truly unique about this particular game is that some of the original actors from the original movie helped out with the voice acting in this game. This game is one of the highest-rated games on this list and is great for anyone that loves the action-adventure genre. I wouldn’t suggest this game to the younger ones but for those who love well-made rated Mature game this is the game to add to your collection. You can find new copies of this game from $20-$30 online.
10. Enter the Matrix for PS2.
I end this list with another one of my personal favorites. This game lets you enter the world of The Matrix which I must say is one of the greatest things to do. Based off more of the second movie of the trilogy, “Matrix Reloaded”, you get to play through the eyes of two supporting characters from the movie. What I really liked about this game is that you could “hack” it by typing in codes in the game. This let you unlock weapons, skills, and other things in the game. Since this game was very popular when it came out I see it used everywhere. You can easily pick up a used copy for less than $5 or buy a new copy for around $10.
