What do you wish you could go back and change about high school? How has your life been since high school? Are you like me and never graduated? My Children graduated from high school and thankfully had opportunities and life waiting for them after graduating. What is the best advice for our children now that they are facing the next step of their life? Children who have completed this milestone in their life may still be looking for a guiding and supportive parent.
I have a friend that tells an inspiring story, he says his Dad was always critical of him, however well intended and constructive his dad may have meant to be, it did not seem to be a motivating factor in his life, but then when he graduated from high school his mother with perfect timing said these words to him, ” You can do anything you want to now !” My friend recounts this story and tells how he responds back, “Really ? ” and then, “Hmm ! ” He says from that point on he has always had incredible self confidence. He has had a long career in a branch of the United States Armed Forces, and was assigned a position that only a small percentage qualified for.
I know there is all kinds of advice we tend to give our children when they graduate from high school. There is financial, spiritual, dating, cooking, and how to live on their own advice. A lot of this our children will ask us or someone else about, or will just learn from the school of hard knocks. As a parent many times I have held my breath and watched my children go, leaving the nest so young, so brave, so determined. It is wonderful! Do you think it is? I do! I have let them go and they have amazed me with their triumphs! Yes! There have been more graduations! Graduations from college, congratulations for first jobs, and even one with a G.E.D.! I am so proud of her ! There have been first pets and the list goes on!
I know like my friend’s advice he received from his Mother, the best I can do for my children is to inspire them with the hope and knowledge they can be and do whatever they want most in life .I will always be a parent, beginning with the day my first child was born, I started the Journey. May God bless me with the wisdom to always listen, and know when to provide guiding and loving support.
