Lately it seems like there are data breaches and problems with many of the retailers that many of us shop from. These data breaches are typically not the user’s fault. But most users think that they are protected online even when they may be giving away their information too easily. Before you shop online there are some things that you’ll want to be aware of and I’ll explain what they are in this article.
Make Sure Your Browser is Up to Date
Internet browsers can have bugs and security problems that allow attackers to forge pages and steal information. Make sure before you make a purchase online that you are using the latest browser. You’ll also want to ensure that any plugins that your browser is using is up to date also.
Always look for a Secure Connection
Websites that take personal information like a credit card needs to have an SSL certificate and a secure connection available. A way you can tell if the website is secure is to look for the lock icon that many browsers display in the status bar. The address should also have “https:” at the beginning of the url rather than “http:”.
Use a Card That Has Built In Protection
Using a card that has buyer protection built in can really protect you with many online purchases. If you’re unsure if your card is protecting you then call their customer service number and inquire about it. Having the ability to remove purchases that are fraudulently charged to you is important and a must for any credit or debit card you use online.
Always Log Out of Sites
When you’re shopping online and make a purchase make sure you log out of the site before leaving the computer. If you save the password to the site in your browser then make sure you use a master password for the browser and close the browser after use. Typically a master password will only need to be entered once per session so be sure you log out and close the browser or the master password will do no good.
I hope you’ve learned how to better protect yourself when shopping online. If the site you want to purchase from doesn’t allow you to make a purchase on a secure connection then you need to be shopping somewhere else. Remember to protect yourself online and always be paranoid when it comes to your online security.
