You may be watching television or listening to the radio and you find out a storm is coming your way. When a storm comes it can do damage to your home and yard. If you hear a storm is on the way you should do a few things to try to keep damage to a minimum or not at all.
Take a walk through your home and look for things that may be damaged during a storm. Unplug electronic devises so they won’t be damaged in case of a lightning strike and if it is possible move them away from windows and doors.
Make sure all the windows are closed so that the wind and rain will not come into the house. An open window can be an invitation for rain to soak floors and furniture.
Take a walk around your home to look for any objects that could fly into your home, cars or gardens. Put away anything that could become a projectile and cause damage. Put away lawn furniture so that it can not blow around in a storm. If your vehicle is outside check to see if the windows are up and the doors are shut tight so that water cannot get into your car. If you can park your car in a building and if you can not do not park your car under a tree.
Check all your downspouts to see if they are attached to the house properly. A disconnected downspout can cause flooding inside your home during a rainstorm.
Make sure your pets are safe. Put them inside so they do not get hurt during the storm.
Plants can also be damaged during a storm. Bring any plants that are outside in pots into the building so they do not get damaged. Wind and rain can break plant stems and ruin plants.
If you have any fruits or vegetables growing outside that are ripe and could be picked you should harvest them before the storm comes. A storm can do a lot of damage to a garden.
It is a good idea to have a storm kit put together long before a storm hits. A storm kit should have food, bottled water, lights like a flashlight or candles with matches and a blanket. Have a storm emergency kit available all the time in the event that a storm hits. It is always nice to be prepared.
