Senior dogs are like senior people. They have aches and pains and have trouble getting around. A dogs need a human as they age to help them stay healthy and active.
A senior dog should continue to move around. They should go for walks as long as there body will let them. As the dog ages the walks will become slower and shorter until the dog can not walk at all. As your dog ages you need to know when they need to walk and when they need to rest. Usually a dog is eager to go for a walk but if they are not interested when it is time to go for a walk you may not want to push it.
Food is a major concern for a senior dog. You may need too change their diet so they can digest their food properly. A senior dog may not need as much food or as many calories for good health. As a dog ages they may not burn up the calories they did when they were young. You may want to look for senior dog food but pick out brands that do not have soy in them.
A dog may drink more water as they age or they might stop drinking it all together. Watch for changes in the water that your dog is drinking and make sure that the dog is drinking some water every day.
A dog needs a comfortable bed as they get older. Old bones and muscles need to have a soft place to lay and get some sleep. A dog may sleep more as they age and need a better bed. Get a nice thick dog bed that is big enough for the size dog you have.
A senior dog may start to lose their eyesight and hearing. As they lose these they may need your help and guidance to get around. Dogs can usually do well without sight or hearing but you may need to keep them near you for security. Furniture that is moved can become obstacles. Keep open paths where the dog travels so they can keep mobile without running into things as they move about.
Give an ageing dog comfort by showing them love and giving them attention. Let them get plenty of rest and make sure they are eating and drinking.
