Right now my husband and sons are up on the roof replacing the leaking shingles with some metal roofing. It started out to be a paid project for the adult sons but has actually turned into something more. Sometimes they are having fun up there. Then I realized that we should have been doing these projects together as a family even when the kids were small. Not dangerous projects like the roof but simple easy projects. The guys on the roof have moments of frustration but they also have moments of great concur as they screw down metal panel after metal panel.
Even a project like cleaning up the lawn after a dirty winter can be done so much easier, faster and more enjoyable with the whole family out there doing it together. The more people that are involved in a project the faster it should get done and you might even have some fun doing it. Get the little kids rakes that fit their size and teach them how to use it. Don’t push them too much when they are small or they will get frustrated. Try to make the project as fun as possible. Pick up all the downed branches and sticks after a storm and put them all in a pile. Then when the time is right and it is safe you all can enjoy a bon fire together with that pile of sticks you all piled up together.
Plant a garden together. This is a fun way to grow your own food and have fun together doing it. Everyone can have their own crops that they are responsible for or the whole family can care for the whole garden together. The outcome of a garden project can be tasty and beautiful.
Paint a room together or the whole house. Clear out the room of the stuff and tape off all the woodwork and things that should not be painted. Then give out brushes and rollers and start the fun. Make sure everyone is wearing bad clothes that can get full of paint.
Even a choir like cleaning the house can be done with everyone involved. Get everyone to pick up all their stuff and put it away. Grab the vacuum and some dust rags and get everyone down to business.
A family project can be fun if everyone is in the right mood. Try to make it fun as you accomplish something together. Try to be as fair as you can about what everyone is doing and listen to what everyone has to say. Let everyone be a part of the process.
