Breathing causes oxygen to pass through our lungs and go into the blood stream. The result is we breathe out carbon dioxide into the air. If we breathe too shallow the body does not get the right amount of oxygen into the blood stream and the body does not eliminate the right amount of carbon dioxide. This can cause a decline in brain function among other problems. The proper way to breathe is through the tummy.
When we breathe right we can help improve our posture and relieve stress and anxiety. You can also help alleviate tension, asthma, insomnia and it can help your immune system work better.
To learn how to breathe better you can lie down on your back on the floor with your calves resting on a chair. Then put a couple of big books on your stomach and breathe deeply. Keep calm as you are breathing and feel the weight of the books on your stomach.
After you are relaxed take one of the books off of your tummy. You will feel lighter as you breathe and your breathing should be deeper. Remove the other book while you continue to breathe deeply. Try to breathe like you did when you had the books on your stomach. This gives you an idea of how you should be breathing all the time. Breathe from the stomach not from the chest.
Try to always breathe from your abdomen all the time. You may need to remind yourself every so often how you should be breathing. It is very easy to go back to an old habit especially if you have been doing it that way all your life. Keep breathing from your abdomen when you sleep, eat and walk. What ever you do keep a thought about how you are breathing until you start to do it naturally. Eventually you will breathe from your abdomen all the time without a thought.
Breathing from your abdomen will help your body remove toxins and relieve stress. It can also help you with respiratory allergies and asthma. You will find that you have better lung function when you breathe from your stomach.
If you are having trouble sleeping try to fall asleep on your stomach. It is natural to breathe from your abdomen when you sleep on your tummy.
