Living in the South, under the shade of many beautiful trees, inside a house with lovely wood floors, ants have become an unwelcomed nuisance in my southern paradise. The factors contributing to my battles with ants could be the changes in weather, their attraction to the wood of my trees and floors, or just the sweet cake left over from the graduation party we had this past weekend. Regardless of the cause of their ant travels into my home, I have discovered a few helpful tips over the years that helps diminish my ant infestations. These tips are all natural remedies, because the use of harsh chemicals in my home is restricted due to my children touching everywhere their hands can reach.
Stop the Ants Entrance into Your Home
The first step to take that will assist you now and in years to come is to close off any holes or gaps in window seals or under doors. Products used as sealants are silicone caulk, putty, and even petroleum jelly is a temporary sealant method, until one of the permanent solutions are available. Find the ants entrance into your home simply by following the worker ants trail.
The use of citrus-based house deodorizer sprays or mixed water and white vinegar sprays have proven useful in cutting off the ants’ entrance into my home. The white vinegar and water is sprayed around windows and doors on the outside of my home, while I use the citrus scented sprays inside the house around doors and windows. It leaves the house smelling great and it has helped with my unwanted ant visitors.
Use Food to Get Rid of Ants
A natural way to end your problems with ants is to use corn meal wherever you notice there are ants. The corn meal is not harmful to your children or pets. Once the ants carry it back to their colony and attempt to eat the meal they can’t digest it properly and the meal causes them to die.
Ants are not fond of caffeine. The method of ant removal by the use of caffeine can take a few weeks to see results, and since ants only live 8 to 10 weeks, it is more prudent to use a method that will yield faster results in combination with the coffee grounds.
Destroy Their Colony
Another method that helps rid your home of ants is to target their ant colonies, which you may notice out in the yard as mounds of dirt. To destroy their ant mounds use boiling water, be very careful, and pour the boiling water on the ant homes. Although some ants can return to any colony, most return to one colony and once this colony is destroyed, they have nowhere to go or a queen to serve.
Of course, if these softer methods aren’t successful in ridding your home of ants seeking professional assistance from exterminators is recommended. Ant bites can cause allergic reactions for some and we don’t want them scurrying around our homes. Killing ants does not fill me with joy, but if they stayed outside, I wouldn’t be forced to kill them.
