If you find that your car is wet after a rain storm, you are probably panicking about what to do; however, a simple leak is not always as bad as you may think. Many cars have leaks in them that need to be fixed before mold can start to grow, and there are a couple of things you can do at home to check and see what is going on.
The first thing you want to do when you discover that your car leaked in rain water is to check all of your windows and doors and make sure that they are all up and closed properly. Many times these problems come from someone pumping a window handle as they were getting out of their car, or did not shut the door quite all the way. If you discover that this has occurred you can breathe a sigh of relief, as you will only need to dry your car and make sure your window is not left open again.
The second thing you will want to do when your car has been leaking in water is to dry it out as soon as possible. This can be done by taking a towel and dabbing as much of the wetness up as you can. You can also take a carpet washer and use it to vacuum up the excess water. Once you have removed as much of the water as possible you are going to want to open your doors and windows to let the water evaporate out.
If your car was properly fastened for the storm with its windows up and its doors closed, you will have to start looking for other options. Look at the trunk first to make sure no water has gotten in there. This is just a precaution but a good thing to do as you do not want your trunk to rust away. Now check the door and window seals to see if any of them might be too damaged to continue. If one is, you will have to either repair it, or get a whole new seal and put it on. Seals are usually not to expensive, and if they are you can usually makeshift something with weather stripping that only you will know the difference about.
Once you have repaired the bad seals you will not know if your work has been successful until the next rain, unless you want to take a garden hose and sprinkle your car with water. If you do and your car still leaks, have a friend sprinkle your car with water while you sit inside and look for the leak. Then repair it as best you can, or take it in to a shop.
