If you have bought a new pair of boots and want to keep them looking good, or if you have an old pair of boots that is starting to look worn out, there are a few things you can do to restore them. Benjamin Franklin once wrote, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that is absolutely true about leather boot care.
The first thing you will want to do is look at your boots. They should be made of leather for these tips to work. Sometimes however, leather boots may actually be made out of vinyl or plastic. Look at the tag inside your boot. You will probably have a list of materials the footwear is made from. If leather is not mentioned, there is no way the boots are made of leather, and these tricks will not help.
The first thing you should do is clean your boots. You can do this with soap and water. Use warm water with a small bit of soap either in it, or as a bar on the side. Grab a toothbrush and scrub any dirt or scuffs on the leather with the toothbrush. If you have any gouges in the boot from rubbing them against a sharp object, be extra careful on that area. You do not want to hurt your boots any more then they already are.
Once you have washed your boots, take some olive oil, and gently rub it into the leather. Use a little bit at a time, putting the oil into your hand and rubbing it in gently. Olive oil is good for dry skin, and can help heal yours, Leather is the skin of an animal, and even though it can no longer heal, the absorption of olive oil will replace the natural oils that have dried and warn away. Make sure to work this well into any cracks, scuffs, bends or other deformities in the surface of your boots. This will also darken the boots a little, but they will brighten back up, However, you will have to completely cover the leather part of your boots, otherwise they might not be the same shade or color as the rest, once the oil has soaked in.
After you have oiled your boots gently let them rest for a while, this will let the oils completely soak in and dry to the touch. If they are still greasy feeling, take a paper towel and rub them to remove excess oil.
