Making your own homemade yogurt is easier then some people think. It can be intimidating but once you have done it then you wonder why you were so timid in the first place.
To make homemade yogurt you need:
A gallon of any kind of milk you want (1%,2% or even whole milk)
A quarter cup of plain yogurt
Next take a clean sauce pan and pour all you milk into it except for one quarter cup of milk which you will use later.
Bring your pot of milk to a boil and then take it off of the burner and put a food thermometer in it.
While it is cooling off you can take your quarter cup of milk that you saved earlier and mix it with the quarter cup of plain yogurt.
When the temperature of the milk in the pan reaches 100 degrees skim off any layers of skin that may have formed on the top of your pan of milk and take your milk and yogurt mixture and mix it into your milk. Make sure you mix it all together well.
After you have all the ingredients mixed in well take the sauce pan with the mixture in it and wrap it with a towel. Place the wrapped sauce pan and place it into your over with just theoven light on. Leave it in the oven for at lease 16 hours.
Once the 16 hours are up you can check the mixture and you should have some yogurt. Store your homemade yogurt in the refrigerator or you can strain it through a cheese cloth and you will get Greek yogurt.
If you want to make it Greek yogurt you will need to let it sit in the cheese cloth and squeeze it occasionally for about 6 hours until it turns nice and thick.
When your yogurt is done store it in your refrigerator or eat it right away. You can add flavor to your yogurt like vanilla or even chocolate. Fruit is always good with yogurt so you can add some strawberries or blueberries to the yogurt.
Homemade yogurt is great because you can make it the way you want it without any added ingredients that you don’t want. Remember that homemade yogurt does not have preservatives so it will not stay good as long as yogurt that has added preservatives.
