If you know someone who is addicted to chewing tobacco, or if you are addicted to the substance yourself, it can be a very difficult experience. Chewing tobacco is not as disruptive to life as smoking, since it involves the tobacco either staying in your mouth or being spit into a proper receptacle, but it is just as dangerous to your health, and can lead to gum disease and cancer. If you or someone you know chews, the best thing would be to stop immediately; however, that is not always an option.
Quitting is never easy, and it will never be easy. Addictive substances like tobacco create a need in people that will never go away. Also they have a feeling of independence and freedom with them.
The first thing you need to realize is that your friend or relative that does chewing tobacco is a free person able to make their own choices. If you push to hard or sometimes even at all, you might strain or even lose the friendship between you and them. You have to be cautious when talking about the substance and downgrading it will probably send them back into using it.
The most difficult thing is to talk to them about their addiction. It can be a horrible experience but is necessary. First ask them if they would like to talk about it. If they say no, leave them alone. At least for a week or so until you believe they would be open to talking about it again. Then ask again. If again they say no, put it off again for twice the length of time. Repeat this process until you get to talk to them. If they ever begin to angrily rage, or have very strong negative feelings when you ask them, you may have to abandon your attempt. If they wish to quit however it is time to help them.
Alternative options are one of the best things you can use to help them quit. Herbal chews are usually available in tobacco and even department stores, and you can usually buy them for not too much. You may be tempted to empty their tins and replace the contents with the herbal chew; however this is a bad idea, as they will feel cheated by the taste and feel of it. Also if you do this without their permission they will become furious at your invasion into their privacy.
Nicotine patches are also very helpful, but be careful, as they can also be addictive.
