If you are a very patriotic person, especially if you are a veteran, you may find it horrifying to see your countrymen, burning, or protesting with your nation’s flag. Old Glory is one of the most powerful American symbols. It has stood the test of time, with only minor changes to the number of stars that are on it. But the main thing Old Glory symbolizes is freedom. That key word is why some people disrespect the flag.
The Flag has accompanied many brave men into battle, and deserves our respect. It is not supposed to ever touch the ground, but things can go wrong. During the Vietnam conflict many protestors would burn the flag to show their contempt for how their country was being run. They did this not to upset the soldiers or other patriotic people, but instead to grow interest in their cause. To them America was in distress. However flying the flag upside down would not have given them media attention. They burned it because they wanted that cherished symbol of freedom to show that the people of America were not being as free as they had once been promised, but instead were being marched to a war they did not believe in. In this case, Old Glory was being burned in hopes that it would help provide the promise for which Old Glory and the United States of America Stand. Since the freedom of the press and right to assembly are in our nation’s founding documents, it is hard to dispute their right.
In other countries that are not as liberated and free as the United States the burning of a nations flag, as well as merely speaking up about your disproval of any faction of the government is punishable. Sometimes these protestors who are found to be against their government are put to death for speaking, or even being suspected of speaking against their government.
The United States of America is not a country like that. People are allowed to express their opinions about anything, and If they choose to do so by burning the flag, that is their right. Remember, the only reason they are burning the flag is because they have very strong feelings about how to improve the lives of the people of the United States, not because they wish to disrespect.
In other countries where the United States is not viewed highly, our flag might be burned out of disrespect. And unfortunately that is their privilege as well. For there must be a reason that they have such strong negative opinions about the united states, and retaliating for the destruction of a simple symbol, would only worsen those feelings.
