If you have a flooded basement your not alone. Basements around the world flood every season with the coming of the spring melt, or the rainy season. Many people prepare for this with a lot of hard work and moving, others just let their basement flood and act surprised when it happens. Here are a few things you can do to keep your things safe and get your basement as dry as soon as possible.
The first thing you have to realize is many homes are built to handle the flooding situation. It’s not uncommon especially on hills or near rivers. Look around your basement for a drain. If your basement slopes down to a corner or the center at all, you will usually find a drain at the end of the slope. Sometimes a cardboard box or another piece of furniture may be clogging the drain. Something as simple as that can turn your basement from a semi dry heaven during thunderstorms, to an indoor lake. If you have something on top of your drain, find a new place for it. Your drain has to be completely open in order to work properly. The water that seeps through you walls will just travel across the floor of your basement and down the drain. This means you will probably only need to keep your items a few inches above the floor for the water to go underneath.
If your basement does not have a drain you are going to want to move all of your items off of the floor every spring. There are several kinds of shelves you can buy, but you have to be wary as metal shelving will rust unless it has a very durable paint, or some other rust resistant coating. Wood shelving is an even worse choice as it will lead to rot and high water marks on the shelving units. Sometimes you might want to move all your items to a new location. A woodshed is a good option to store your items you keep in your basement whenever it’s about to flood.
The main thing you should do to keep your basement clear is keep a watch on the weather and your surroundings. If a nearby lake or river is flooding over, it is probably time to prepare for a flooded basement. If the snow is melting fast around your home you will also want to prepare for a flooded basement, and if a large storm with torrential rain is coming, you will probably want to prepare your basement.
