If you have found a love of board games recently you might be having a hard time buying new games. Right now board games are very popular, more popular then they have been in years. People are starting to make family game nights with their children and even grandparents, and others invite friends over just to play board games. This popularity has been great for game developers, and for manufacturers, but it can be very expensive for consumers. Luckily there are some ways to build your board game library without breaking the bank.
New board games can cost between twenty and sixty dollars. This may seems a little high for a printed board with four plastic pieces and a small deck of cards. Some of these games are a worthwhile price, as they include pewter or wooden game pieces and durable plastic cards. If you want one of these games, you might want to look online. Sometimes you can get gently used versions for less then half the price of retail stores. You may also be able to find a first edition or discontinued version that is new for a small amount. These rarer versions of the game can be considered collectable, so if you find them for a low price, there is a good chance they might be worth more in the future then they are now.
If you are not set on getting the hottest new board game, you can buy a Vintage game from garage sales or thrift stores. Vintage games can be just as fun, and usually even more challenging then the new games you can find today. One problem with them however is they usually do not have very colorful boards, or in depth pictures that set a scene. However, truly vintage games now have a charm all of their own.
When you are in a thrift store, there is usually a small section in the back completely devoted to books, Video Cassettes and board games. These board game stacks can be high, so take a good look at them. There can sometimes be a title that surprises you. When you find one with a title that interreges you, grab the box and carefully remove it from the stack so that none of the pieces can fall out. Now look at the back of the box, because the rules of the game are usually there. If the game sounds fun to you, check the inside to make sure it still has all of the pieces. If it is taped together, that is a good sign, as the people who put it on the shelf did not want people to mess with it. Ask the person who runs the store if the game has all its pieces, if they say yes, you can probably trust them, but if you find that the game you bought is missing a piece, you can either replace it as best you can or try to return it.
