Red lipstick is today’s fashion statement. Be bold, and see for yourself how ruby-red lips can make you look more vibrant, self-confident, and youthful. Here are a few tips I use to keep my lips looking their best wearing this all-ages-appropriate color.
The first thing I do is lightly coat my lips with my foundation. Doing this gives lipstick something to adhere to, and makes it stay on lips longer before needing a touch-up.
A trick I learned from a cosmetician is to next apply a light application of a waxy lip balm, such as Burt’s Bees Natural Skin Care Products & Natural Personal Care Products . This helps stop the color from feathering, or spreading, out from your lips.
My next step is to outline my lips with a nude color lip liner. I prefer to use nude because even if you think your liner matches your lipstick, when the color starts to fade, you can be left with a dark ring around your lips. Liners are waxy, like balms, so they also help to keep color on your lips, not above and below them.
Always follow your natural lip line when using a liner. Don’t try to give the illusion of fuller lips by drawing outside of them. It will be noticeable, and not flattering.
Now comes the best part; applying the lipstick. I’m over 60, so I use a matte or satin color, since glosses and frosts tend to accentuate lines and wrinkles. If your face is blooming with youth, then go for that shimmer and shine.
After the first application of lipstick, blot lightly with a tissue. Dust a bit of translucent powder to lips, using a small make-up brush, or even a craft paint brush. This keeps the first layer of color from fading, and helps it to “set”. Apply a second coat of lipstick, and bring lips together to gently pat in the color.
If your red begins to fade a bit, gently wipe lips with a tissue, and apply a light coat of color. Follow up with a lip moisturizer.
Now look into a mirror and smile. You look gorgeous!
