Writer’s block will eventually affect anyone who takes pen to paper or taps on a keyboard. Doesn’t matter if you are a blogger, article writer, or a novelist; some days the words just do not come easily. In my case, writer’s block usually comes when I am trying to meet a looming deadline. Here are some tricks that I use to help break through my writer’s block and get the words flowing again.
There is just something about stepping away from the computer that helps. Even if you are away from the computer only for few minutes, the fresh air can help. Take a quick walk around your yard, around the block or even a moment to go check your mail. Sometimes just being away from the writing can help.
Turn Off the Technology
I love my computer and the ease of the web. But there are times that the computer, especially the web, can be too distracting. I cannot concentrate on my writing. The best thing that I can do is to put pen to paper. There’s just something about writing out your ideas on paper that can help make the words come easier. I use a composition notebook until I have filled all the pages, then start with a new one. I do use these so I can date them and see if I used the material that I had written.
Be a Note Taker
Learn to carry a small notepad with you at all times in your purse, back pack, laptop bag, or even in your back pocket to jot down ideas. I actually carry index cards with me. I have packs stashed everywhere in my purse, my car, and my laptop bag. When I get an idea or any type of inspiration, I jot down the thought. Then, I throw the notecards in a basket. When I get stuck, I look over my cards for inspiration. Word of advice if you use this system; make certain that your notes are detailed. Other wards, you may be wondering what you were thinking at the time.
Sometimes a little music can be inspirational. So, turn up your radio and just listen. Or if you are like me I put in my ear buds and listen to my mp3 player which has a lot of classical music, movie soundtracks, Broadway and Celtic music. I always find these music genres to be inspirational.
