South of the Wisconsin Dells is a monument dedicated to Chief Yellow Thunder. This monument is a modest memorial made of local stone for the legendary Chief Yellow Thunder who lived his life in the area with his mate. You can find the Chief Yellow Thunder monument on highway A between the Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo, Wisconsin.
The monument to Chief Yellow Thunder is in a little wayside along the road. It is so small that it is easy to miss. You will find it on the right side of the road from the Wisconsin Dells in a open field. A fence is erected around the wayside and a small parking area is in the fenced in area. It sits on a small wayside very close to the highway so there is very little walking to go see it. The wayside is very plain without many trees but there is a sign that tells you more about him.
The Monument to Chief Yellow Thunder was originally on the other side of the road close to where it sits today. It was moved and set up where it is now. The real place where Chief Yellow Thunder and his mate were buried was sadly vandalized several times by people looking for artifacts.
During his lifetime Yellow Thunder was put on a train and made to leave the area several times but he always found his way back. He must have grown tired of being removed from the area so he signed up as a homesteader in the area and it was then illegal for him to be removed. He and his wife lived on the homestead until she died in 1868. Yellow Thunder died 6 years later.
If you visit the wayside where Chief Yellow Thunders monument is you will find that it is made of field stone. It sits in a field looking rather lonely so in the 1960’s my husband’s family would gather flowers every Memorial Day and take them to Chief Yellow Thunder’s monument. It became a family tradition for many years. He remembers it fondly and has a soft spot for chief Yellow Thunder.
